A Warm Welcome
to My Creative World
of Large-Scale Paintings & Drawings
My name is Christian Bahr. I am a contemporary German painter and draftsman with over 35 years of international practice. My large-scale works combine poetic atmosphere with artistic tension, balancing harmony and conflict through an abstract-expressionist language and a powerful, expressive execution. My work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Canada, and China. I also accept commissions, including very large-format works.
Painting is essential to me.
I work near Hamburg, at the edge of the North Sea.
My work centers on the individual human being and explores philosophical, mythological, and historical questions.
The following pages offer a deeper insight into my work.
Selected galleries present my paintings and drawings.
My artistic motivation and painting philosophy are explored in detail.

7 AND 1 LIVES
The domain title refers to the well-known notion – particularly in European and Anglo-American culture – that a cat is said to have seven (sometimes nine) lives. For me, this image stands for multiplicity: different perspectives, creative currents, and forms of expression. Painting, drawing, language, and voice are not separate disciplines, but interconnected ways of approaching the world. 7 AND 1 LIVES is a metaphor for this openness — and for an artistic practice shaped by continuity as much as transformation.
A quote by Franz Kafka perfectly reflects the way I approach my work as an artist – day and night, and in every single painting:
Beyond a certain point there is no return. This point has to be reached.
